J. James McFarland has project-managed hundreds of major projects from concept to completion.
Here is a look at the process of his 2023 video production “Greater Idaho Movement.”

This “Greater Idaho Movement” video is an example of a large project I created from start to finish through every step.
Here are some of the steps involved in this production.
First I started with the script. The client in this case had an idea of the specific talking points they wanted to be in the video.
Working outward from there, I created a two-man skit to generate a fun and engaging political pitch.

Having edited and focused through five drafts of the script, I moved on to storyboarding out the scenes.
This step saves time and money on set during filming as well as creating visualization to help generate great imagery throughout the project.
The ideation step brings the project further into reality as the concept is fleshed out with test graphics.
This project also called for some fashion mood boards.

The next step in the project was filming. In this case this meant several different sessions on a back-to-back daily schedule.
These images show some of the later raw video, after some compositing work has already been completed.
The project as I envisioned it would rely heavily on hand-drawn illustrations mixed with digitally drawn work (specifically the maps).
The more I can stick to hand-drawn illustration, the cooler the final product will be. My absolute preferred work to do has always been illustration and india ink. Slower, but worth it.
